Home fires occur more in winter than in any other season. Half of all home heating fires occur in the month December, January and February. Heating equipment is involved in every six reported home fires and is responsible for one in every five home fire deaths. To keep your family and home safe this winter follow these fire safety guidelines:
|* Keep anything that can burn at least three (3) feet from any heat source like
fireplaces, wood stoves, radiators or space heaters.
|* Keep portable generators outside, away from windows, and as far as possible
away from your house.
|* Install carbon monoxide detectors and test them at least once a month|
|* Have a qualified professional clean and inspect your chimney and vents every
|* Store cooled ashes in a tightly sealed metal container, and keep it at least
ten (10) feet from your home and any nearby buildings.
|* Plug only one (1) heat-producing appliance (such as a space heater) into an
electrical outlet at a time.
